Thomas and Sheena Southam are the husband and wife team of Chasing a Plate. They are Kiwi presenters, videographers, writers and photographers who explore different cultures using food as their lens- sharing their experiences on their YouTube channel, blog and social media platforms with a combined following of over 195,000+ and over 26 million YouTube channel views.
Thomas and Sheena travelled on a full time basis for 4 years in search of the best food around the world. They delve into a country’s food culture by seeking out the spots where locals eat- with a particular focus on markets, street stalls and mom and pop restaurants. They hunt down traditional foods and iconic dishes, travelling off the beaten path to get to the heart of a destination’s food identity. They capture their food experiences on video for their audience of food lovers- people who travel to eat!
Returning home to New Zealand in 2020, Chasing a Plate now has a heavy focus on showcasing the phenomenal food culture of Aotearoa New Zealand. A recent video series follows their travels from the tip of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island in a camper van showcasing wineries, restaurants, oyster, crayfish and pāua fishers, organic dairy farmers and more. Recent partnerships to showcase and promote Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s dining scene include Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, Panmure Business Association, Dominion Road Business Association and Northcote Business Association. Chasing a Plate have just released a series in partnership with Northland Inc highlighting Northland’s food and beverage scene.
Chasing a Plate appeared on The AM Show in June 2021. Chasing a Plate were bi-monthly contributors of a food and travel column in New Zealand Herald’s Be Well magazine from January 2019- March 2020 when the magazine was put on hiatus as a result of the pandemic. Chasing a Plate were 2019 finalists in the Best Culinary Travel category of the Saveur Blog Awards and have been featured in New Zealand Herald’s Viva magazine and Nadia magazine.
Why are we qualified to create content about food & travel?
We live to eat and travel. Chasing a Plate started as a Melbourne based food blog in 2013 borne from our love of finding the best food in a city renowned for its eateries. Over the past 10 years we have travelled to over 30+ countries. We’re all about veering from the well-trodden tourist path to hunt down local food with great stories and histories. We eat our way through cities to find the best renditions of a dish.
In October 2016 we packed up our apartment, hopped on a plane and started travelling full-time. We created Chasing a Plate, the YouTube channel so we could bring our audience along on our eating adventures in a more engaging way. Through videography, writing and photography we want to showcase destinations through their food cultures and inspire our audience to experience it for themselves.

What an absolute joy to read these comments/reviews. Your enthusiasm is palpable and I can just picture you at the amazing venues. Just wish I could visit some of them!!! Love your idiosyncratic assessments – your genuine love of food and dining as a social event, gives all you say memorable authenticity. Exciting adventures for you wherever you are, Sheena and Tom.

Thanks for visiting our blog Ian!
Hi Sheena & Thomas! I’m heading to Bali in a few weeks and your blog posts were so helpful! You ate at some very adventurous Warungs! I’ve been told my American stomach might not respond well to Bali street food, but I don’t want to miss out on an authentic experience. Do you have any suggestions as far as what to look for when picking a shop/vendor or what medicine’s you took with you?
Thanks!
Hi Kate! Thanks so much for checking out our Bali posts, we’re so glad they were helpful! We tended to stick to warungs that were popular with the locals, (whether they were eating in or taking it away) and for meals like nasi campur or nasi padang we usually went in the morning or for lunch so that the dishes hadn’t been sitting around all day. We also stuck to drinking beer or bottled drinks in warungs. We didn’t get sick from any of the food in Bali so I’m sure you will be fine too! The local food is mind blowing and miles better than the food aimed at foreigners so definitely take a chance on it. You won’t regret it! Have the best time!!! Sheena & Thomas
Hi Sheena, it was lovely meeting you at ProBlogger. I love your reviews, nice photos too!
Hi Cyndie, it was great meeting you too! Thanks for coming over and checking out our blog! 🙂
Its so lovely to see all the great food pictures! I came here after first seeing your youtube channel. Other than the food, can you also show us about the places you stay etc? Maybe include it in the videos 🙂 so that we can get a feel for the place- food and bed are the most important things for me 🙂
Hi Yi Lin, thanks for coming over and checking out our website 🙂 Seeing as we’re a food channel our videos will focus primarily on food for now but we’ll definitely make sure we include a few travel guides on here about our accommodation. Also, follow our Instagram (@chasingaplate)- we’re pretty active on IG Stories and you’ll often find extra travel stuff on there! Thanks so much for watching our videos Yi Lin. We really appreciate your support! Cheers, Sheena & Thomas
Kia Ora. It’s so good to see Thomas is so adaptable to eating local asian cuisine, from eating noodles with pickled green chillies and slurping herbal broth to mamak food. I am delighted at his hearty mouthful of reviews of Malaysian Chinese food. I love Sheena’s yummy sounds she makes as she tucks into the food! Well done fellow Kiwis!
Hi Jennifer, kia ora! Thanks so much for watching our videos- it’s so awesome having Kiwis watching our content 🙂 We are both loving the food in Malaysia so much and are excited to be heading back there in a weeks time. Hope you enjoy the content coming up on the channel Jennifer! Cheers, Sheena

Hello Sheena & Thomas – I just love your videos on Indonesian street food. Your enthusiasm and friendly approach is really refreshing. I’m a regular visitor to Indonesia and I would so like to be able enjoy all of the wonderful street food as you do, however I offen get sick. I’m unsure if it’s because I struggle with spicy food or easily get sick from ice & raw fruit/vegetables. Do you ever have problems and do you have advice how to avoid problems.
Keep up with the great videos.
Andy
Hi Andy, thanks so much for your support and we’re so happy you enjoyed our Indonesia series! We had such a brilliant time filming there and can’t wait to get back- we barely scratched the surface! We seldom get sick from eating on the street- we always make sure to stick to stalls which are really busy- wherever we are in the world. One thing we always carry is activated charcoal capsules. They are a lifesaver for any stomach issues- the first inkling you get that something ain’t right, take a couple of tablets and they’ll sort you right out. Even if you have full blown food poisoning they’re great to keep taking as they sweep up all the bugs and bacteria and get them out of your system quickly. You can find them at most pharmacies or health food shops. Hope that helps for your next trip Andy! And thanks for taking the time to write- we always love hearing from our viewers. Hope you like what we have coming up on the channel! Cheers, Sheena (and Thomas)
Hi guys: my wife and I only recently came across your YouTube channel, and it is now one of our favourites.
Will you ever be hitting the food trails in the UK at any time??
Plus we are curious as to whether you have a family or not.
Keep safe and we look forward to seeing more of you on YouTube.
Hi Richard, thanks so much for stopping by to say hi! We are so happy you guys are enjoying our content. We would love to film in the UK- it would be epic to do a road trip stopping at small producers and to really take the time to explore the food culture. Just need to save some pennies first! We don’t have children yet so it has been relatively easy to gallivant about just the two of us filming for the channel. Hope you like what we have coming up- thanks so much for watching and for supporting our content! Cheers, Sheena
