Must eat: Sandwiches at Pret-a-Manger: London

by Chasing a Plate

What’s a visit to the UK without a Pret sandwich?  I lived in England for a year back in 2003 and worked as an assistant at a private girls boarding school.  A salary of £90 a fortnight didn’t stretch far and a Pret sandwich was a major luxury.  So you can imagine my excitement at the prospect of being able to eat Pret sandwiches for lunch everyday if I wanted to on our trip!

After a day of shopping for stocking fillers and checking out Kensington High Street, we ducked into Pret-a-Manger for a light lunch before hitting Oxford Street.  My ultimate sandwich wild crayfish and rocket beckoned me and as it was Christmas we couldn’t pass up the Christmas sandwich.

What I love about Pret sandwiches are that they are packed with filling.  The wholegrain bread was soft and fresh, the wild crayfish was plentiful and moist and the mayo bound the filling together.  Whilst it wasn’t overly flavoursome it was light and fresh.

The Christmas sandwich exceeded my expectations.  Slices of turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing and baby spinach were enclosed in soft wholegrain bread.  The flavours were punchy and the sandwich incredibly moreish.  So moreish in fact that I tried on two other occasions to grab a Christmas sandwich but they were always sold out.

I wonder how long this fix of Pret-a-Manger will have to last me…
