The Parlour at Fortnum & Mason: Mayfair, London

by Chasing a Plate

After KA’s birthday breakfast at Balthazar and a meander around Carnaby Street and Liberty we were ready to hit The Parlour at Fortnum & Mason. An ice-cream sundae at Fortnum & Mason was on my list of things to eat so I was chuffed to be indulging in an Icy, Nicey Mint sundae for lunch. The Parlour offers some savoury dishes but really, everyone is here for the ice-cream: cocktail ice-cream sundaes, cocktail floats, ice-cream sundaes- INDULGE!

The Icy, Nicey Mint sundae appealed as it didn’t sound too sweet: pieces of Fortnum’s Icy Mints and Kendal Mint Cake with Mint Chocolate Chip, Vanilla Bean and Walnut and Maple Syrup ice-creams, topped with whipped cream and maple syrup- who was I kidding?

The behemoth arrived in a massive goblet.  I loved the crispy wafer, the mint chocolate chip and vanilla bean ice-creams and the solid bite of the kendal mint cake throughout.  I wasn’t so sure about the walnut and maple syrup ice-cream- a bit of an odd choice I thought.  I also would have preferred a scoop of their Amadei® chocolate and chocolate syrup as opposed to maple.  Nevertheless I did manage to plough my way through most of it!

TBS opted for the Banana Boat which was filled with Strawberries and 12 year old Balsamic Vinegar, Smooth Banana and Toffee ice-creams topped with whipped cream and roast flaked almonds. We both agreed that the Strawberry and 12 Year Old Balsamic Vinegar ice-cream was a hit, as was the Smooth Banana.  The roast flaked almonds were also a welcome change from the usual crushed peanuts.

It’s certainly not cheap (I’d probably be content to share one if I came back as they are also generous in size), but if you’re in the area and needing a sugar hit to face the hoards of shoppers on Regent Street then it doesn’t get better than The Parlour.

Good to know:
