A trip home inevitably turns out to be a “how many meals can I fit in?” exercise. Always at the top of the list are fish and chips from The Fish & Chip shop in Sandringham and a mince and cheese pie from The Fridge in Kingsland.
What is it about a pie from The Fridge? It’s the flaky pastry, the solid weightiness of it in your hand and the fact that they are JAM PACKED with filling. I am usually a strict mince and cheese pie kind of gal but PL is steak and cheese inclined so anticipating a few bites for herself had bought one of these. I wasn’t complaining.
The thick layer of cheese clung to every inch of the lid of the pie, the thick chunks of steak were tender and I liked the addition of soft pieces of carrot. The gravy was tasty and quite tomatoey. No gristle or unidentifiable ‘meat’ here. The addition of oodles of tomato sauce (I am a fiend) rendered this experience perfect.
Now don’t go thinking you can pass over a buck and get the goods. Long gone are the days of dollar pies. This baby will set you back $8.50 but trust me, it’s money well spent. Long live (The Fridge) pie!
