When we return home to NZ, we give ourselves carte blanche to go food crazy- fit in as many rounds of fish and chips, mince and cheese pies and lamingtons as possible, it aint the time to worry about waistlines or heart health, it’s time to load up. So it was only fitting that the activated muesli or charred broccolini didn’t get a look in on a recent visit to Mojo’s, instead it was all about the bacon sandwich.
Mojo started life as a boutique coffee roaster cum cafe in Wellington and now operate a number of cafes around NZ. Mojo, Newmarket is housed in a old car garage- it’s an open and airy space with tables both outside and in, a counter laden with muffins, sausage rolls and pastries and an open kitchen.
We grab a table easily enough and despite the sluggish service manage to put in our coffee orders and get a jug of sparkling water (they have it on tap!) It’s hard to get a decent breakfast for under a tenner in Auckland so we’re surprised and happy to see a couple of options available on Mojo’s menu. There are the usual breakfast suspects- eggs benedict, smashed avo and poached eggs, you get the gist and a few salads, a pasta and some meatier options for lunch together with a range of superfood smoothies. But it’s the bacon sandwich with a fried egg for me and the peanut butter and vine tomatoes combo on five-grain for TBS.
The sandwich is really, very good. Toasted sourdough sandwiches crispy, meaty slices of Westmere bacon, an oozy fried egg and a good whack of Martin Bosley’s BBQ sauce- Marty Sauce which is smoky and sweet (Bosley designed Mojo’s menu). It is a hugely satisfying number which I wouldn’t hesitate in ordering again.
TBS’s slightly unusual breakfast arrives ready for him to assemble. A generous serve of Fix & Fogg super crunchy peanut butter is spread on each slice of toasted five grain and adorned with sliced vine tomatoes. The sweet juiciness of the tomatoes and the savoury, roasted nuttiness of the Fix & Fogg is a great combo- fresh but with an appealing earthiness.
All that’s needed is for the staff to perk up and be a bit more attentive but with the tasty food and decent prices Mojo is the pick of the lot in this part of town.
