What to eat at Tsukiji Fish Market: seafood paste snacks

Tsujiki Fish Market is a must visit on any trip to Tokyo. It’s the largest wholesale fish market in the world and is perhaps most famous for its tuna auction. The inner wholesale market is where all the commercial selling of the fish is conducted whilst Tsukiji’s outer market is lined with fish shops and street food stalls selling everything from ramen to curry. And of course fish, lots of fish. This guide is based on the food available around Tsukiji’s outer market (visit between the hours of 9:00am to 1:00pm) for the most choice and best atmosphere. Here is our food guide on what to eat at Tsukiji Fish Market…

1. Daiwa Sushi

Open Monday to Saturday 5:30am to 1:30pm

A sushi breakfast at Tsukiji Fish Market is mandatory for any visit to Tokyo. At Daiwa sushi you can experience the life changing omakase sushi set for around $40USD per person- chump change considering the quality of the meal. You might sample eel, prawn, sea urchin, tuna belly- whatever is fresh. It’s all over very quickly but we can promise it’ll be some time before you forget the flavour of that tuna belly melting on your tongue. Make sure you arrive early to avoid waiting in line for too long. We ate at Daiwa Sushi after attending the tuna auction and got in line at around 6:00am. The wait for a table was approximately 45 minutes.

2. Grilled seafood skewers

Simply prepared grilled seafood is the perfect snack as you’re wandering around Tsukiji market. There are prawns and all sorts of shellfish but our pick is the unagi or eel. The flesh is so tender, the glaze sticky and sweet. A must eat!

The oysters at Tsukiji Market are gigantic and so fresh! Order them freshly shucked, drizzle with a squeeze of lemon and slurp it down. They’re creamy, meaty and will leave you wanting more!

5. Seafood paste snacks

You’ll see shops all around Tsukiji Market selling all kinds of seafood paste snacks. They’re slightly sweet and very satisfying. The bacon wrapped numbers are particularly good.

6. Giant prawn cracker

We admit that this may be included on the list more for its novelty factor than anything else but the giant prawn cracker is AMAZING. A thin rice cracker dotted with large, flattened prawns. It’s the ideal beer snack!

7. Soft serve

It’s impossible not to be captivated by the exotic soft serve flavours at Tsukiji Market- think soda, black sesame and green tea. After all that seafood you’ll be after something sweet to end your morning of street food snacking and a soft serve is highly recommended!
